World Snooker Championship 2018: Anthony McGill gets new nickname after Ryan Day comeback

Publish date: 2024-03-11

Many of the top snooker stars have all earned nicknames over the years for their introductions into the arena.

Ronnie O’Sullivan is commonly referred to as ‘The Rocket’ due to his rapid playing style.

Other nicknames include world number one Mark Selby as the ‘Jester from Leicester’, John Higgins as the ‘Wizard of Wishaw’ and Shaun Murphy as ‘The Magician’.

But McGill believes he may have found his identity after winning five frames in a row to beat Day in their first round clash at the Crucible.

“I think we should call me the ‘Glaswegian Gladiator’,” The Scot told World Snooker.

Master of Ceremonies Rob Walker trialled the ’Smiling Assassin’ for McGill three years ago but the 27-year-old wasn’t keen and asked for the name to be dropped.

Fans also began referring to McGill as the ‘Tartan Nugget’ but the potter again expressed his dislike towards the name.

But the ‘Glaswegian Gladiator’ now appears content with his new label.

Asked about his incredible comeback win over Day, McGill said: ”I can't believe I won! The whole way through I was behind and wasn't anywhere near the required level.

"It shows what you can do if you dig in and never give up. I didn't play well and maybe that dragged him down a bit.

"I can definitely take confidence from the fact that I played my best snooker towards the end of the match when my back was against the wall.”
